Quality of Touch

What is quality of touch?

The goal of a great massage is to feel wonderful, to let go of your aches and pains and return to the day feeling great. At Jennifer Brand Spa this is our focus. We want you to leave feeling wonderful in wonderful ways and this can be felt through the compassionate touch of our amazing massage therapists. Every member of our team is dedicated to their trade, they love what they do and helping others feel heavenly encourages them to experience joy. This desire to be in the service of others is one of the most important cornerstones of an amazing massage, but there are other valuable traits a therapist must possess to guide you on your expedition toward peace. A massage therapist must have empathy, humility and the ability to creatively navigate your massage experience.

This image is meant to highlight the most important virtues of Quality of Touch, Humility, Empathy and Creativity.

Communication

Communication is key in all aspects of our daily life, but it is especially important throughout a massage. This requires a degree of empathy. As a massage therapist we must possess the ability to imagine what our pressure and quality of touch feels like and have the ability to contrast that information with the sensations you are describing to us. One of the biggest pieces of advice I can offer anyone who is receiving a massage is if you feel uncomfortable at any time, let your therapist know. Sometimes you may find yourself compelled to say nothing, because you may believe massage is supposed to hurt, or you may be afraid of hurting your therapist’s feelings. Trust me, if something doesn’t feel good your therapist wants to know. We entered this profession to be in the service of others, to help people feel wonderful and help you live your highest quality of life. We want you to feel good, so anytime something feels bad, let us know.

Quality of Touch & Pressure

The pressure used throughout a session is often defined subjectively from one person to another. This is one of the reasons why a deep tissue massage at one spa feels different than it does at another. At Jennifer Brand our therapists must prove they are capable of performing a deep tissue massage before they are bookable for that service.  This allows us to establish a degree of pressure continuity from one therapist to the next, and it also allows us to ensure our practitioners can perform the service without hurting themselves. This is one of the many ways we invest in our team, so they may practice their trade safely and without injury. When a therapist’s mind, body and spirit is healthy it creates a safe space for them to offer the same to you.

While some massage therapists may be able to vaguely define the pounds per square inch used throughout a session, they still must communicate with you to ensure they are using the appropriate amount of pressure. No matter the type of massage it is important to talk with your therapist throughout the session so they may adapt to your needs.

At Jennifer Brand we divide our massages into two broad categories: Massage and Deep Tissue Massage. Massage is a light to medium pressure experience, often full body, with a focus on relaxation. Deep Tissue differs in that it transitions between medium to firm pressure, uses an array of tools, and an assortment of advanced techniques and styles. Deep Tissue is usually used when people have a specific issue they want to be focused on throughout the entire session, which means the massage might only focus on specific areas of the body. While this may be the case in most instances it is not true of all massages. Some people request Deep Tissue because they prefer the firmer pressure throughout the session. If you have scheduled a massage, but have requested firmer pressure than medium, there will be an upcharge for the service. The reason is because we believe in compensating our service providers for the work they do. A Deep Tissue massage is strenuous and requires advanced training to perform, and because of this the price for Deep Tissue massage is higher.

At our core our services at Jennifer Brand Spa are different than other massage locations in that we genuinely care about our team, we foster a peaceful environment and encourage our therapists to explore their trade. Every member of our team performs their massage sessions differently because we celebrate their uniqueness and inspire them to develop themselves as professionals. We believe that when our practitioners feel comfortable, happy, and respected this can be felt by you, our guest. We take care of our massage therapists, so they can take care of you. The quality of a massage is more than a therapist’s quality of touch, their training, or even their drive. It is defined by how they feel within their heart. If they feel like they are a part of something meaningful, real and have the ability to help others live their highest quality of life it can be felt in every massage they perform.

Holding Space

Holding space is a term used to represent the act of listening and providing a safe and nonjudgmental environment for others. It is one of the most important skills a massage therapist can possess, because it allows you to rest, relax and melt into the table as you are massaged. For many, a massage is their only quiet time, it is a place where they can allow their thoughts to settle and their mind to sleep. Others want to speak their mind, talk about their life, or have a conversation. No matter how much silence or chatter you enjoy, the tone and presence offered by your therapist determines how comfortable, fun, and peaceful your massage can be.

When a therapist can hold space with their clientele it allows them to keep the experience about you, it ensures you remain the center of their attention, and helps you feel seen and heard. In addition to creating a space for you to relax, the act of holding space improves a massage therapist’s quality of touch. When their only focus is on you, it encourages them to remain aware, connected and focused on helping you explore the magnificent sensations of touch. From the deepest depths of my heart, I believe massage is one of the greatest gifts we can offer. It is a moment when we can encourage someone to feel fantastic in ways that are safe, honest, and healthy. As a massage therapist I can tell you there is no greater joy in life than helping someone who is hurting, feel fantastic; or to guide someone from the dullness of the day toward delightfulness. When a massage therapist holds space with you, when they make you the center of their universe and derive joy from helping you feel heavenly it sets the stage for a truly transformative massage experience.

As above, so below. Our leadership takes the time to hold space with our team. This means we listen to them, allow them opportunities to influence their environment and vent when they need to vent. At Jennifer Brand we want our therapists to look forward to every day they come to work. We want them to love every moment they are in the service of others and know that we are genuinely a team, united under the goal of creating an oasis of peace. We are able to maintain this because we are an LMT owned massage spa. Every level of management knows how it feels to be a client and a massage therapist. This is important because everyone at our spa has the heart of a healer, we want others to live their highest quality of life and achieve their dreams.
