Cupping

Cupping Massage Tip

What is cupping used for? If you have stubborn aches and pains that are challenging to alleviate with traditional massage, cupping may be your answer. What does cupping feel like? Cupping is like having a gentle octopus massage on you. Specifically designed cups are placed on an oiled area of your body, then the air is pumped out of the cup. This creates a suction that pulls on your soft tissues. In many respects it feels like a reverse massage, because it is pulling instead of pushing.

This massage approach can be really effective for people who need deep tissue treatment but aren’t able to receive firm pressure. It combines the benefits of trigger point therapy, myofascial release, and deep tissue massage without the pain sometimes associated with these treatments.  In my experience it has assisted with the reduction of inflammation, increase range of motion, reduce pain and encourage a sense of peace and ease.

It is important to note that cupping may leave superficial bruising on the areas it was applied to and will typically take 7-10 days for them to go away. This is important in case you intend to attend a special event and would like to avoid looking like you wrestled with an octopus.

If you would like to learn how to properly perform cupping schedule a massage class with me and bring a partner. If you have not taken my introductory massage course, you will be required to complete it first before taking this class. If you are massage therapist, you may schedule this class with me without having to take the introductory course first.
