Baby the CNS

Baby the CNS

I believe the human body is like a baby, because the only way it knows how to communicate with us is by screaming. Unfortunately, when the body screams it manifests as pain. If a baby is screaming in her crib, we could scream at her to get her to quiet down, but this pause only lasts a moment and in mere seconds the child will be screaming again and louder.

When we approach the management of pain through the use of massage, we need to be gentle, loving and nurturing. In effect we need to treat the body in the same way as we would a baby. Just like a baby crying in her crib we need to start by picking her up and offering her kindness, patience and love. We want her to know she is safe and in good hands.

This is a purple image with golden stars on it. It is located in the Baby the CNS article.

Once she begins to calm down, we can then investigate to see what she needs. Does she need her diaper changed, or a new bottle? Then once we have addressed her needs, we nurture her again and lay her back in the crib so she may once again fall asleep.
When someone is hurting, we need to treat their body and central nervous system like a baby. This means we need to make sure they feel safe, comfortable and cared for. Like a child, they need to know they are in good hands.

When you perform massage, your pressure needs to move in and exit slowly. To practice this, grab an unwrapped stick of butter and place your hand on top of it. Focus on the firmness of the butter and slowly push down. Make sure you are not smushing the stick, instead you need to allow the heat to decide your speed.

Another exercise you can do is to get some firm clay and slowly press your fingers into it. This is an exercise of patience and focus. You will try to transform the clay into some kind of shape, but the learning objective isn’t to create something cool, it is to feel the pressure that is being applied as you change its state.

After you play with the clay for a little bit, I want you to massage and knead it like it were someone’s muscle. Adjust your pacing and intention to match the kindness you would offer a crying baby.
