Scalp Massage

Massage Tip

Have you ever wanted to just lay back and enjoy the bliss of someone massaging your scalp? The sensation of feeling someone’s hands slide through your hair as they gently scratch your head is magnificent. As you read this, I want you to take a few moments to close your eyes and run your fingers across your scalp. Explore every texture, knead the skin, delicately tug on your hair, and dial in on every exquisite sensation.

There is no doubt that a scalp massage feels incredible, and though you may already know it, massaging your scalp is a wonderful way to manage stress. Researchers discovered receiving a scalp massage for 15-25 minutes resulted in improved stress hormone levels, blood pressure and heart rate. Imagine being in that clinical trial.

You don’t have to run a clinical trial or read a bunch of research to know how spectacular a scalp massage is, anyone who has ever experienced one already knows. You are not alone in your love for it, do a quick search on YouTube and you will see endless video results for scalp massage.

Whether your hair is as short as it can get, or it runs down to your toe tips, you can experience the pleasure of a scalp massage. The key to receiving a scalp massage is simple, just lay back and relax. If you want to provide a scalp massage for someone else, I am going to provide you with a few massage tips to get your started.

The first thing you need to do is slow down. One of the fundamental rules of performing a massage is you must go in slowly and exit slowly. This gives the person you are massaging the opportunity to trust your touch. They may trust you personally, but their central nervous system might not. It is your responsibility to create a space for their brain to know your touch is going to be safe.

Think about their body in the same way you would interact with a baby. If you move suddenly or too fast you are going to scare the baby. Be gentle, loving and patient and your kindness will go a long way.

At the core of a scalp massage, the goal is to be gentle. The person we are touching has endured the hardships and stress of the world all day long. Your touch needs to be welcoming, compassionate and loving. When they feel your fingers touch their hair and skin your first contact must begin with the softness of a subtle wind.

Next, I want you to think simple. Start with the basics. There is no reason to attempt all sorts of unique styles and techniques out of the gate. We want them to feel comfortable and safe, so if you start using methods that are alien to them, they might worry you will tangle their hair into knots.

Some simple techniques may include sliding your fingers through their hair from front to back or using your fingernails to scratch in little baby circles. You could gently knead their scalp; this is done by using the softest parts of your fingers and hands to massage their head. We often forget how hard the tips of our fingers are, and the sharpness of our fingernails, so you will need to pay close attention to where your fingernails are. They may feel good when we are scratching someone’s head, but they will not feel good if you scratch them by accident. You could get a soft brush and stroke it through their hair. When you do this be aware that as the brush moves through the hair it will hit tangles. When this happens, you will need to untangle them with your fingers before you pull the brush all the way through. Sure, there will be people who enjoy the sensation of busting through all those tangles, but it is important to assume they won’t. If they want you to pull the brush all the way through, they will tell you to.

Finally, I want you softly communicate. A scalp massage is a kind, gentle experience and your tone needs to match. When you talk to them, be sweet and good. A great scalp massage will encourage them to close their eyes, rest and digest the pleasure of being pampered.
