What is a Massage Class?
I teach a handful of massage class types. Some are designed for couples who want to discover new ways to bond, connect and communicate. Others are for students enrolled in massage school who want to develop their skills, so they may graduate with exceptional ability. The final type of massage classes are for massage therapists who desire additionally training outside of the traditional continuing education format.
- Couples Massage Class: If you are someone who wants to enrich your relationship with a massage class, I will teach you based on what you want to know. When you know next to nothing, I will focus the attention of the class on areas you normally hurt, or would love your significant other to massage. In this class we focus on ethical, appropriate touch. In the beginning of most relationships, we are often content with being touched by someone we adore. Over time we accidently teach our significant someone to massage us in ways we might not particularly like. This massage class is an opportunity to undo these patterns and replace them with techniques that feel good or are rewarding, without any hurt feelings. If you are in a new relationship, this massage class is a great way to start off right, so you and your significant someone massages in the way you both want to be touched. Additionally, I will teach you how to be self-reliant in the pursuit and creation of new techniques.
- Massage Mentorship: If you are a licensed massage therapist seeking a mentor we should sit down and have a conversation. I love helping massage therapists find their way. I know how challenging it can be to enter an industry that is complex and confusing. With my knowledge and experience I can help you unravel the rats nest of our profession, so you may embark on a fruitful expeditions, reap the rewards of your wise investment, and thrive throughout your life as a massage therapist.
Massage Class Fundamentals
While in my class there are a handful of fundamental concepts I encourage throughout the session:
- Throughout every second of the massage session I want you to have open and honest communication with the person you are massaging.
- If at any point you experience pain or discomfort when performing a massage technique, stop. I often say, if it hurts don’t do it. We cannot help someone else if we are hurting. If you practice massage professionally, don’t use techniques that hurt, because if you do it once, you will do it a thousand times. Using poor body mechanics will end your career prematurely. If you are someone massaging your significant someone, the pain of using a technique will lead you to refrain from wanting to perform massage. You should love every second of massage, whether you are receiving or giving.
- I want you to remember the phrase “ease in, easy out”. This means you need to be gentle in the application of your pressure, whether you are applying it, or removing it. Applying pressure too quickly, even if it is light pressure can cause an autonomic response that may result in uneasiness. As a consequence it will reduce the comfort, peace and ease your are seeking to give throughout the massage. Slowly apply and release pressure throughout the session.
- You should be seeking to provide complete touch in every second of the session. This means every inch of your hand is touching the person. It means you are present in mind, body and spirit. When you are massaging someone they need to be the center of your universe. When someone experiences complete touch for the first time it is a transformative experience, because they know they have your complete and undivided attention.
- When you perform massage your touch should be an exploration of the infinite. There are limitless details we can feel and explore with every touch. This means you must exist within the moment, focusing solely on what you can feel with your fingers and hands. Sink your fingers into the superficial layers of their skin and for the first time truly feel the details, textures and landmarks therein. In life we are often quick to move from one place to another. In massage we are meant to take our time, feel and explore. There is great pleasure in the act of moving slowly and taking it all in.
- As you perform massage I want you to have fun. I want you to celebrate every second. Massage is a beautiful celebration of life, and I want you to feel safe and comfortable enough to laugh, smile and be silly. Massage is one of the greatest blessing of God, and I want you to love every minute as you learn, so you can love every second you give and receive.
