Scar Tissue massage may be scheduled as a stand-alone service or included in your Pain Management massage as an addon. During your session, the therapist will employ advanced techniques to help alleviate discomfort associated with scar tissue. These techniques may include circular movements, pinching, rolling, friction, and petrissage. Additionally, the therapist may use moisturizing lotions, gels, and oils to help improve the skin’s malleability and elasticity.

Benefits

What are the benefits of Scar Tissue massage? This service combines massage, red light therapy, and argan oil. Individually, they are great resources to help alleviate pain, stress, and decreased range of motion. When combined, they become your super team for relief.

Massage (10 minutes)

• Flexibility and Mobility: Scar tissue can feel uncomfortable, rigid, and restrict movement, especially surgical scars. This limited movement can be stressful, leading to increased pain and discomfort. Manual massage of the area can help break down fibrous tissue, promoting flexibility. This can help reduce tightness and improve range of motion, especially near joints.  
• Blood Circulation: Massaging scar tissue can help encourage blood flow, which may support healing, reduce inflammation, and soften scars over time.
• Scar Thickness: Regular scar tissue massage can help reduce the appearance of raised and prominent hypertrophic and keloid scars by assisting in the breakdown of excess collagen buildup
• Pain and Sensitivity: By combining advanced massage techniques with modern pain science, this treatment helps desensitize the surrounding areas of scar tissue, reducing discomfort and itching.

Red Light Therapy (15 Minutes)

• Collagen Production: Red light therapy helps stimulate the production of collagen and elastin by activating fibroblasts, which may help improve skin texture and support scar remodeling.
• Inflammation: The anti-inflammatory properties of red light may help reduce irritation, redness, and swelling around scars.
• Healing: Red light therapy is recognized for its ability to accelerate tissue repair and regeneration, which may help fade scars and enhance skin health.
• Scar Appearance: Studies indicate that regular use of red light therapy can help reduce the appearance of hypertrophic and keloid scars by promoting collagen production.
• Non-Invasive and Painless: Red light therapy is gentle and soothing, which allows it to offer benefits without discomfort.

Soothing Argan Oil Application (5 Minutes)

• Moisturizes and Softens: Argan oil is rich in vitamin E and fatty acids, which help hydrate scar tissue. This helps improve elasticity and softness, reducing tightness and making scars appear less pronounced.
• Skin Barrier: Rich in antioxidants and fatty acids, argan oil helps strengthen the skin’s natural barrier, protecting scars from environmental damage.
• Redness and Irritation: The anti-inflammatory properties of argan oil help soothe redness and irritation around scars, which complements the benefits of red light therapy.
• Improves Outcome: Applying argan oil after a massage helps lock in moisture, which may help prolong the softening effect on scar tissue.
• Scar Appearance: Argan oil, when applied between Scar Tissue Massage treatments, may gradually reduce the appearance of scars by improving skin texture and tone.

Does Massaging Scar Tissue Help?

I’ve been given the beautiful blessing of knowing how it feels to live with scars. It is a blessing for me, because I believe every hardship we face is an opportunity to learn how to help someone else. As a massage therapist, every ache and pain I have endured now serves as a tool to help you feel heavenly.  

I know how it feels to live with uncomfortable, stiff, and itchy scars. I have a long scar that wraps around my side where my lung was removed due to cancer. When I don’t get it massaged, it starts feeling stuck and uncomfortable. Sometimes, it feels itchy, numb, or painful in unusual ways. If you have deep scars, I’m sure you have experienced a cornucopia of sensations.

The benefit of my experience with scars is that I have learned how to comfort my own. This is an asset to you, because I have experienced many of the same sensations you have, and I have experimented with ways to alleviate them. Many massage therapists use techniques and instruments based on the theory of reducing pain and discomfort; I operate with firsthand knowledge.

In my personal experience, yes, massaging a scar can absolutely help. But what does the research say?

Research

“Treatment had a significant positive effect to influence pain, pigmentation, pliability, pruritus, surface area, and scar stiffness. Improvement of skin parameters (scar elasticity, thickness, regularity, color) was also noticed.” [8]

Massage therapy has been shown to have a positive effect on pruritus, an unpleasant sensation of itchiness in the skin. Some studies have shown that massage can effectively reduce scar thickening in hypertrophic (raised, thick, and abnormal) and burn scars. Another study indicates massage therapy significantly improves the pliability of scars. [9]

Special Considerations

• Scar Age and Type: Newer scars within 6 to 12 months respond better than older scars. Deeper scars, such as atrophic acne scars, may take longer to show results and may require more aggressive treatments like laser therapy.
• Consistency: Multiple sessions over weeks or months may be required as scar remodeling is a slow process.
• Individual Variation: The Effectiveness of Scar Tissue Massage depends on your skin type, scar severity, and your personal healing process.
• Not a Cure: While this service may improve the appearance and comfort of scars, it will not eliminate them entirely, especially severe ones.

Home Care

Yes, your therapist will provide you with instructions on how you can massage it at home. When performing scar tissue massage at home, be cautious not to overdo it. Be gentle with yourself. The goal of scar tissue massage is to retrain your brain’s perception of the scar. If you cause discomfort beyond a ‘hurts-so-good’ sensation, you will encourage a negative feedback loop of pain.

I did the Pain Management massage with Shawn - it was a total experience! The education, atmosphere, massage technique, fun tools all made for a fantastic massage. He listened well to the areas I was hurting and tailored his massage accordingly. Highly recommend this place! I had a sisters day with my sister in law for her birthday and treated her to a head to toe experience and from the moment we walked in we were greeted with kindness, and professionalism. I went here for months for prenatal massages with Rebecca, and once with Shawn when I couldn’t wait another week for my next appointment. Shawn is very attentive and also did a session with my partner once that he enjoyed as well, and every session I had with Rebecca was wonderful. I could feel the difference it made on me during my pregnancy, and as someone who enjoys not-so-soft massages, she was perfect but is willing to adjust to what you need. I really don’t have any cons because even the price of it was justified for the service I was getting.
