line

Line

The primary function of the line is to maximize the amount of contact we make with the client. We accomplish this by using micro formulas, transitions, and purposeful presence points. This prevents gaps from interrupting the flow of a session. A gap is an open space or a break between two techniques. Gaps feel like the therapist’s hands are teleporting from one area to another. Teleportation is a disorienting sensation that reduces the quality of a massage.

Purposeful Presence Points: The presence point is any area of your body that is touching the client, whether on purpose or by accident. Purposeful presence points may include maintaining contact when performing necessary tasks or moving their arms when draping.

When discussing the elements of massage, line can be divided into primary types: technique and massage line.

  • Technique line: This is the path a technique takes as it is applied to the client from start to finish, A to B.
  • Massage line: This is the amount of continuous contact maintained throughout a session.

Massage Line Exercise

The Teleportation Test is a hands-on, practical exercise observed by an instructor. Depending on the circumstances, it may be recorded to provide the student with an opportunity to see their transitions and movements after the session. The goal is to minimize the number of times a therapist has to teleport during a massage.

When massaging someone, the only thing that exists for them is the point we are touching. Since our touch is their universe, we must maintain constant contact as a single, continuous, and purposeful line of touch. In massage, our lines are our opportunity to create a story on the canvas of our client’s skin. We can create a painting of pleasure and peace via the brushstrokes of every technique.
