Movement
Movement is how a point moves along a line. It is defined by rhythm, speed, and resistance.
- Rhythm: This refers to the flow of a technique, indicating how organic or mechanical it feels. Does the technique feel like a predictable yet comforting tune? Does it feel random and chaotic? In a relaxation massage, a good rhythm feels like gently rolling waves or smooth footsteps in a beautiful dance. Depending on the type of massage performed, the rhythm may vary significantly. An athletic massage, for example, would have a different kind of rhythm than a Swedish massage.
- Speed: This is how fast or slow a point moves on a line. Speed can significantly change how a technique feels, the client’s sensory experience, and the results of the treatment.
- Resistance: While speed refers to how fast or slow we move along a line, resistance is the traction experienced throughout a technique. It is the grip of the point. Resistance is important because it significantly influences perceived pressure. Perceived firm pressure may be achieved using low resistance with more oil, combined with fast movements and firm pressure. Additionally, similar results may be accomplished using high resistance, without oil, combined with slow movements and firm pressure. The type of lubrication used influences the perceived pressure and movement during a massage. The prevalent types of lubricants used in massage are oil, gel, cream, butter, and lotion. Some techniques do not use any lubricant; these are typically performed slowly to reduce skin discomfort.
The movement of a line can be static or dynamic.
- A static technique does not move. In effect, its point remains in one location throughout the entire technique. An example of a static technique would be trigger point therapy.
- A dynamic technique is a point that moves. Effleurage and Petrissage are considered dynamic because the point of contact moves throughout the technique.
